Avoid Hiring The Wrong Moving Company
Hiring a moving company to relocate you?
This is a decision most of us have to make at least once in our lives. For some professionals, choosing a moving company is nearly a yearly ritual. Here are a few tips to keep you from choosing the wrong moving company.
Most people hire movers this day and age, especially when moving long distances. The cost of a move is expensive, but hiring the wrong moving company is WAY more expensive. The good news for most people is that if a company is relocating you, they generally pick up the bill. If you are the decision maker, the following tips will help you choose a reputable moving company.
Moving companies offer several great reasons to hire them - with different levels of service. From companies who will show up and move you and your belongings to companies who will pack, clean and move your belongings from place to place.
There are also more and more ‘complete’ package companies springing up, designed especially professionals - allowing them to move to their job, without the hassle of it all. These companies do it all - from finding a suitable house within your price range and requirements, to packing you and moving you in. Some even unpack at the other end for you.
Smart consumers will begin well in advance of the move in choosing a moving company. They will start their research online and look for reviews on Google, CitySearch and other consumer review websites. Angies List is also an excellent place to review moving companies as well as the BBB. You’ll also want to ask the people at the relocation company some very specific questions and get everything in writing.
You may also want to ask the company themselves for references, and information on when their cheapest and most expensive times are to move. You may find moving midweek to be far more cost effective, as weekends always carry a premium.
Most moving companies will send out a representative before they give you a firm moving quote. If you get a relocation quote over the phone…run! No moving company can give you an accurate quote over the phone or email. To make their jobs easier and guarantee you get the best price possible, make sure your home is clean and organized.
It’s also a great idea to take your own inventory. Horror stories abound about missing antique furniture and other valuable when the moving company van gets to your home. It’s wise to watch the moving company employees, no matter how reputable the moving company is.
Always ask to review their policy on breakdowns or delays. You never want to be sitting at your home waiting on the moving company. How many days late do they have to be before you can have your fee back? What if they’re a week late in showing up? These are the types of questions you need the answer for before hiring a moving company.

Pretty informative and useful suggestion. Packing is really a stressful job but if planed carefully make less hurdles. I think Professional movers are better choice then moving by yourself.
MOVING REVIEW FOR ALLEN DAVIS MOVING SYSTEMS OF SAN DIEGO—DO NOT USE!
WORST MOVING EXPERIENCE EVER WITH ALLEN DAVIS MOVING SYSTEMS!! THIS IS ALL TRUE AND ACTUALLY HAPPENED TO ME…
I hired mr. allen davis for a long distance move in march 2009. he sounded trustworthy, cordial and reliable over the phone. but come moving day: DON\’T!!! he promised to bring all necessary packing materials, but only showed up with a roll of flimsy KITCHEN SARAN WRAP!(see pics above) he even angrily chastised me to \’go out and buy your own brown wrapping paper AND pay for it out of your own pocket!!\’ when i complained to him.
allen davis had NONE of the standard bubble wrap, wardrobe boxes, cardboard boxes, disassembling tool kit or even the quality brown wrapping paper(NORMALLY ALL supplied by PROFESSIONAL movers)promised over the phone to cushion and safeguard my things for the 500 MILE trip…all to cut corners, and make allen davis lots of $$$$$ for himself. Of course, come things got banged up(see pics above). He treats his paying first-time patrons like myself like caca.
Also, there was no direct supervision of his moving men over the move as allen davis sits in his van during moves; smelt old urine when one of them walked by me each time.
LIVE GIANT 3-inch cockroaches found in my bags crawled out into my new apt. kitchen after being stored overnight in his moving van. (see pics above) I did Not have a pest problem before the move. Must be allen davis\’ hired buddies bumming a ride…LOL
Worst of all, took and kept two of my 20 year old antique gold-framed mirrors when he left property. (see pics above); boy, I miss those two mirrors…wonder if they\’re being held for a hefty ransom??
Then, allen davis TWICE demanded I pay him an additional $120.00 for \’waiting around!\’ this is AFTER I already paid him $2500!!
BOTTOM LINE: if you are searching for a qualified mover, hire ONLY BBB-approved PROFESSIONAL Movers….allen davis moving systems IS NOT one of them and NOT VERY Professional!! DO NOT make the SAME mistake!…. shop smart…think BBB businesses FIRST….and of course, do read others\’ moving reviews…and hey, you all-DON\’T EVER pay a mover $2500.00 for kitchen saran wrap and ABUSIVE RUDE AND STINGY service and you won’t get screwed…..Tom
