Avoid Hiring The Wrong Moving Company

by Alexander G Baxter

Hiring a moving company to relocate you?

This is a decision most of us have to make at least once in our lives. For some professionals, choosing a moving company is nearly a yearly ritual. Here are a few tips to keep you from choosing the wrong moving company.

Most people hire movers this day and age, especially when moving long distances. The cost of a move is expensive, but hiring the wrong moving company is WAY more expensive. The good news for most people is that if a company is relocating you, they generally pick up the bill. If you are the decision maker, the following tips will help you choose a reputable moving company.

Moving companies offer several great reasons to hire them – with different levels of service. From companies who will show up and move you and your belongings to companies who will pack, clean and move your belongings from place to place.

There are also more and more ‘complete’ package companies springing up, designed especially professionals – allowing them to move to their job, without the hassle of it all. These companies do it all – from finding a suitable house within your price range and requirements, to packing you and moving you in. Some even unpack at the other end for you.

Smart consumers will begin well in advance of the move in choosing a moving company. They will start their research online and look for reviews on Google, CitySearch and other consumer review websites. Angies List is also an excellent place to review moving companies as well as the BBB. You’ll also want to ask the people at the relocation company some very specific questions and get everything in writing.

You may also want to ask the company themselves for references, and information on when their cheapest and most expensive times are to move. You may find moving midweek to be far more cost effective, as weekends always carry a premium.

Most moving companies will send out a representative before they give you a firm moving quote. If you get a relocation quote over the phone…run! No moving company can give you an accurate quote over the phone or email. To make their jobs easier and guarantee you get the best price possible, make sure your home is clean and organized.

It’s also a great idea to take your own inventory. Horror stories abound about missing antique furniture and other valuable when the moving company van gets to your home. It’s wise to watch the moving company employees, no matter how reputable the moving company is.

Always ask to review their policy on breakdowns or delays. You never want to be sitting at your home waiting on the moving company. How many days late do they have to be before you can have your fee back? What if they’re a week late in showing up? These are the types of questions you need the answer for before hiring a moving company.

  1. Pretty informative and useful suggestion. Packing is really a stressful job but if planed carefully make less hurdles. I think Professional movers are better choice then moving by yourself.

  2. MOVING REVIEW FOR ALLEN DAVIS MOVING SYSTEMS OF SAN DIEGO—DO NOT USE!
WORST MOVING EXPERIENCE EVER WITH ALLEN DAVIS MOVING SYSTEMS!! THIS IS ALL TRUE AND ACTUALLY HAPPENED TO ME…

I hired mr. allen davis for a long distance move in march 2009. he sounded trustworthy, cordial and reliable over the phone. but come moving day: DON\’T!!! he promised to bring all necessary packing materials, but only showed up with a roll of flimsy KITCHEN SARAN WRAP!(see pics above) he even angrily chastised me to \’go out and buy your own brown wrapping paper AND pay for it out of your own pocket!!\’ when i complained to him.

allen davis had NONE of the standard bubble wrap, wardrobe boxes, cardboard boxes, disassembling tool kit or even the quality brown wrapping paper(NORMALLY ALL supplied by PROFESSIONAL movers)promised over the phone to cushion and safeguard my things for the 500 MILE trip…all to cut corners, and make allen davis lots of $$$$$ for himself. Of course, come things got banged up(see pics above). He treats his paying first-time patrons like myself like caca.

Also, there was no direct supervision of his moving men over the move as allen davis sits in his van during moves; smelt old urine when one of them walked by me each time.

LIVE GIANT 3-inch cockroaches found in my bags crawled out into my new apt. kitchen after being stored overnight in his moving van. (see pics above) I did Not have a pest problem before the move. Must be allen davis\’ hired buddies bumming a ride…LOL

Worst of all, took and kept two of my 20 year old antique gold-framed mirrors when he left property. (see pics above); boy, I miss those two mirrors…wonder if they\’re being held for a hefty ransom??

Then, allen davis TWICE demanded I pay him an additional $120.00 for \’waiting around!\’ this is AFTER I already paid him $2500!!

BOTTOM LINE: if you are searching for a qualified mover, hire ONLY BBB-approved PROFESSIONAL Movers….allen davis moving systems IS NOT one of them and NOT VERY Professional!! DO NOT make the SAME mistake!…. shop smart…think BBB businesses FIRST….and of course, do read others\’ moving reviews…and hey, you all-DON\’T EVER pay a mover $2500.00 for kitchen saran wrap and ABUSIVE RUDE AND STINGY service and you won’t get screwed…..Tom

  3. this is ALLEN DAVIS this person doing this review is totally lying,he has gone on every site he can find using different names and addresses.the only truth in his review we broke a cheap mirror ,we sent him money to replace ,he is obsess with his mirror,s,.he filed a claim with the BBB OF SAN DIEGO CA,but since we had already sent money they closed his claim go online and check,. this person is a very dishonest person i,e been in business for 25 years and this is the only complaint i,v received in all this years,i don,t mind a true or honest review good or bad as long if true but this review is just one lie after another.i find this sites don,t really check this review for honest or true statements.just let people go on rant.i don,t know were he got pictures from but not of my truck,.thanks ALLEN DAVIS

  4. ALLEN DAVIS, sir, you clearly broke my trust and lost all credibility as a \’professional, careful, experienced\’ mover as your false ads declare when you clearly STOLE my TWO gold-framed mirrors(NOT \’A MIRROR\’–learn how to count OK??), hoping I wouldn\’t notice since per the Pacifica City police report #09-1506 you had in YOUR OWN WORDS told the cop that \’the missing MIRRORS(TWO) had been broken during the move and were thrown away in the dumpster at the residence\’ w/o informing me until I called you 4 days later long-distance to ask you about them. Then, you tried AGAIN A SECOND TIME to SCAM an EXTRA $120 from me….I rebuffed you of course…you got pissed and HUNG UP! How \’PROFESSIONAL\’ of you!

Moreover, not trusting you since you had dropped/lost ALL of my desk contents all over your truck, I insisted to inspect your \’empty\’ truck before you left to ensure you didn\’t keep any of my personal items but saw nothing. Clearly you HID well those TWO mirrors for YOUR OWN PERSONAL USE which is a THEFT CRIME. If you were honest, then, before driving away 500 MILES back to San Diego, WHY the Hell you didn\’t knock on my door to inform me that you \’broke\’ my TWO mirrors??

Thus, I firmly believe that you\’re presently using those TWO mirrors to preen your pretty 56 year old self with at MY expense, laughing your arse off KNOWINGLY that you got away with murder(THEFT). Pray to God that you lose business for being SO damn SHADY AND DISHONEST….and that NO ONE else will be your next poor victim….

  5. Mr. Davis JR. claims that I am ‘a very dishonest person.’ How can that be since it’s he who stole my two gold-framed mirrors, lied and covered it all up, even to the local police when I file a formal police report to determine their whereabouts since Davis NEVER told me what he did with them; also Davis lied to the judge in small claims court where I had to file a suit on Davis for his various torts and illicit acts.

Lastly, he would increase his credibility if he would learn to use proper spelling, syntax and grammar since it’s torture trying to read his rants. And ‘NO’ I would Not recommend Allen Davis’ movers to anyone to suffer the Hell I went thru with him. Best shop elsewhere. Read others online reviews first before hiring. Peace to all.

  6. BEST AVOID ALLEN DAVIS\’ NIGHTMARE RENTAL MOVING VAN

Mr. Allen Davis walked thru our door only armed with some kitchen saran wrap, some dirty blankets, but no other moving supplies as promised. He quoted $2500 fee but demanded $2948. Moreover, he hired illegal alien guys who ONLY spoke Spanish! PLEASE SPEAK ENGLISH! Don\’t understand you guys?? Need a translator here, Mr. Davis! And he drove an unmarked rental van. What a CHEAPSKATE!…he cut corners all the way. His men had NOTHING to wrap up my delicate items…massive migraine I gots here!
While his men toiled away w/o any breaks for 5 hours straight, Davis, the sole owner, leisurely sat in his rental van downstairs, and failed to supervise his untrained street helpers; hence, many items were damaged. Davis refused to reimburse for damages. Then, Davis pilfered two pieces vintage furniture(as collateral?), denied he had them, covered it all up. Had to file police report and took him to court. He told the judge the same thing while dressed only in beach bum attire: cut-off denim shorts, dirty OIL-SOAKED T-shirt and rubber flip flops sans socks. Again, very UNprofessional….and forgot to ever say, \’Your Honor\’ to the female judge.
What a moving Hell! Don\’t advise hiring him unless you like getting cheated, rude, disrespectful, and unprofessional treatment. Oh yeah, huge roaches from his unkempt van got into my new place; had to buy lots of glue traps; thanks for nothing! Go elsewhere; it\’s just not worth it. Peace to all.

  7. ALLEN DAVIS JR., OWNER OF ALLEN DAVIS MOVING SYSTEMS of San Diego is the MOST UN-professional, cheapskate, shady, and dishonest person I\’ve ever met. Davis even resorts to hiring CHEAP ILLEGAL ALIENS off the streets, who ONLY spoke Spanish. He even warned me as if it\’s no big deal. What nerve! Someone should report him to ICE and the authorities for violating federal labor laws, just to clear up and stop this blatant violation of federal laws by greedy employers. Illegals steal jobs from U.S. citizens, and with a 23% national jobless rate, Davis is contributing to Americans\’ great suffering.

  8. I really enjoy it! Great! Your report feels like an A.You\\\’re amazing. That\\\’s big help for me. Your atical is really surprising.Your artical is great! The article is very helpful to me.
